THE OLD CASTLE, Château-Neuf AND THE RAmparts OF Laval
Nearly 1000 years ago, a first motte was founded by Guy I de Déneré on the current Place de La Trémoille. A stone building was built from the twelfth century on the edge of the rocky outcrop overlooking the river Mayenne.
Since the beginning of the thirteenth century the castle keep overlooks river Mayenne and Old Bridge. Climbing to the top is hard work, but the reward is beautiful: a view of the whole city.
Although it was a a prison during the nineteenth century, since 1967 the castle is home to the Museum of Art Naïf.
